Seven South Yeronga

There have been some pretty pictures of food popping up on feeds of late, and buzz about a new place open on the south side. Seven South in Yeronga has received some pretty good PR coverage, and we thought it seemed worth checking out for ourselves.

Seven South outside
Outside. Greenery abounds.

It is a beautiful space, surprisingly large, with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. The indoor area gets plenty of light through the open glass doors. Air conditioning keeps it comfortably cool inside on a warm day though. A fresh palette of colours is used, with plenty of white, wood, and greenery. There are white wire-backed chairs at the tables through the middle of the room, which add to the airy feel. Along one of the walls are blackboard with specials scribbled up in chalk, and horizontal wooden blocks, some of which double as shelves for little pots of succulents and glasses. One of the other walls is wallpapered with green leaves. It all feels very lush, and a well-designed area which accommodates different customer group sizes.

The white-tiled service counter, and a view of some of the seating options through the room.

We were greeted soon after approaching the entrance, and shown to a table. Water (not cold) and glasses were promptly brought to the table, and menus. It took a while to decide on what to order, as on the weekend the breakfast menu is available all day, and we were there when lunch was actually in play as well, and there were breakfast and lunch specials on the boards.. We started with caffeination, which seemed an easy way to begin.

The green wall. With the rest of the room, it isn’t too much at all.

The coffee was thought to be rather tasty.

I requested an adapted milkshake option of chocolate and coffee (so a mocha), which came out tasting indeed of chocolate and coffee, and just a hint of sweetness.

The wallpaper makes a great backdrop for the milkshake.

We ended up choosing the potato and parmesan hotcakes, and the croque madam (supposed to be a croque madame?). We had toyed with the idea of getting a third dish as well, but thought it might be wiser to see how the first two settled.

The potato cakes were squishy, but seared so that they had a crispy skin. The bacon was nicely crispy. The avocado aioli was more like an avocado puree, but one couldn’t complain at the richness. The humus was a more vibrant colour than the usual beige putty you get, but it had all of the expected nutty flavour, with no bitterness.

The croque madam (I’ll use their spelling) had a good amount of ham in it. The flavour of the cheeses came through. The egg dip made a light coating on the outside of the bread, but retained softness on the inside. We would have preferred a runnier egg on top though. The yolk in this case had been just about cooked through. The piccalilli, with bits of squash, cauliflower, and seeded mustard, added a bit of crunch and punchy tanginess with a hint of citrus.

And with a bit more height. I don’t do flatlays.

In the end, there wasn’t room for a third dish. Perhaps next time.. They also do dinner most nights.

That very cool aforementioned wall with chalkboards and wood.

The waitstaff were friendly, and never short of smiles. They were timely when it came to checking if we were ready for food and drink orders, without being pushy. You could tell that they really liked the food they were selling/serving.

Seven South is a relaxed, lovely place to be, where you’re made to feel welcome, and has some pretty tasty food as well. Worth the trip seven km south of the city..
